Bed Bugs

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are tiny parasitic pests that are most commonly known for feeding off the blood of the sleeping individuals whose beds they have infested. Adult bed bugs are identified by their flat, oval-shaped, reddish-brown colored bodies. They are roughly 1/4 of an inch in length.

Adult female bed bugs generally lay up to five nearly invisible and hard-to-spot eggs every day. These eggs cling to a variety of surfaces inside homes until it is safe for them to hatch. In their pre-adult phases, bed bugs appear much smaller and lighter in color, but they still resemble the distinct oval shape of adult bed bugs through most stages.

As bed bugs mature through their nymph stages, they shed their exoskeleton after each blood meal. This, along with a few other signs, can help you to learn if you are dealing with a bed bug infestation:

  • Dried, rust-colored spots of blood across mattresses and bed coverings.

  • Small, dark streaks of excrement on bedding and other fabric items.

  • Shed exoskeletons, otherwise known as “cast skins.”

  • Extremely small white or translucent eggs and egg casings.

Why are bed bugs in my home?

By nature, bed bugs are hitchhiking pests, which means they rarely invade homes on their own. Instead, they require someone to carry them inside. To get into our homes, they cling to objects such as furniture, luggage, backpacks, and clothing.

It is not uncommon to find bed bugs in cabs, on airplane seats, in hotel rooms, or other areas frequented by many people. They will find plentiful amounts of purses, luggage, and clothing items to cling to in these areas. It is impossible to know where a bed bug will end up once it has hitched a ride, but it is easy to say if they find a steady source of food in your home, they'll settle down pretty quickly.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Though many people have little to no reaction to bed bug bites, their bites can cause some irritation in individuals. If bed bugs have bitten you, those bites may appear in the form of small red bumps on the skin. More serious health concerns may arise if those bites become infected. If this should happen, we recommend talking to a qualified medical professional to ensure you get the treatments you need.
