Why Do I Have An Ant Problem In My Frisco, TX Home?

ants

Little black ants, acrobat ants, rover ants, carpenter ants, and fire ants are common species. While some of these species are a nuisance, others pose dangers to people and pets. Below is a description of these common area species and how they are dangerous:

  • Little Black Ants- dark brown to black, about 1/16th of an inch long, have a stinger but are too small and don’t pose any threat to humans.
  • Acrobat Ants- light brown to black, 1/8th of an inch long, can sting but rarely do.
  • Rover Ants- pale to dark brown, between 1/12th to 1/16th of an inch long, are considered nuisance pests. While they don’t usually bite, they can weaken structures, which can be dangerous.
  • Carpenter Ants- a combination of red and black, 5/8th of an inch long, are known for damaging wood habits. While they don’t usually bite, they can weaken structures, which can be dangerous.
  • Fire Ants- dark red, 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch long, and known for swarming and stinging people and animals. This species is not only the most dangerous in the area, but it is also invasive and displaces other species.

While some species are a nuisance and others are dangerous, none are welcome in any Frisco home. As a homeowner, you should be aware of how you might be attracting ants to your home and how you can prevent them.

How Can I Stop Attracting Ants To My Home?

Ants, like other pests, are attracted to residential homes by food. Once on your property, they will scavenge for food and make their way into your home through cracks and crevices in the foundation and exterior walls. Because of their tiny size, ants can prove challenging to prevent, but by reducing the factors that attract them, you can decrease the chances of an infestation.

Remove Entry Points:

  • Seal any cracks in the foundation of your home
  • Fill in gaps around doors, windows, vents, and utility lines
  • Place screens, weather stripping, and door sweeps on doors and windows
  • Use a stone barrier of at least a foot wide between your home’s foundation and any grass or mulch

Remove Food Sources:

  • Clean up spills and crumbs immediately
  • Pick up fallen fruit from your yard
  • Rinse out cans, bottles, and food containers before recycling and throwing them away
  • Take out garbage from your home promptly
  • Rinse out both interior and exterior garbage cans
  • Pick up any uneaten pet food
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes out overnight
  • Wipe down surfaces and sweep floors regularly
  • Clean underneath heavy appliances and inside cupboards often

Remove Water Sources:

  • Fix any leaks
  • Wipe down sinks and bathtubs
  • Use dehumidifiers in your home to reduce moisture

These ant prevention tips can help reduce the possibility of an infestation, but prevention isn’t always 100%, which is why you should also know what to do if ants do get inside.
