Wolf Spiders in Texas

What Are Wolf Spiders?

Wolf spiders are a common spider species found in our area of Texas. They are known for their superb hunting skills and excellent eyesight. Their eight eyes are arranged uniquely in three rows:

  • Four small eyes on the bottom row.
  • Two large eyes in the middle row.
  • Two medium-sized eyes on the top row.

Wolf spiders are large compared to other nuisance spider species in our area and can range from black to dark brown with cream, gray, or yellow-colored markings.

These spiders can grow to between 1/4 and 1 3/8th of an inch in length, depending on their exact species. Adult wolf spiders have robust bodies covered in hair and eight long, spiny legs to chase their prey. Wolf spiders typically hunt during the evening hours and rest during the day.

Are Wolf Spiders Dangerous?

Wolf spiders are frightening to many people due to their large, hairy bodies and long, thin legs. However, the good news is that these spiders are considered nuisance pests and pose no real danger to people. Wolf spiders aren’t aggressive and typically won’t bite unless they are handled or feel threatened. In the rare event that a bite does occur, their venom usually isn’t strong enough to cause any serious health problems in people other than a slight bit of discomfort.

Why Do I Have a Wolf Spider Problem?

More often than not, you will find wolf spiders living outdoors. However, they often find their way into homes, garages, barns, and sheds while hunting for insects to eat.

When living outside, wolf spiders burrow under rock piles, woodpiles, fallen trees, leaf or grass piles, and landscaping timbers. Their burrows are where these spiders rest during the day and lie in wait for their prey to pass by.

Wolf spiders that have found their way inside homes and other buildings tend to hide out underneath furniture, in closets, in boxes, crawl spaces, and in basement areas. If wolf spiders are living on your property or inside your home, it means that you don't have just a spider infestation on your hands. Likely, your home or yard is also infested with the insects that those wolf spiders like to feed on.

How Can I Prevent Future Problems With Wolf Spiders?

Preventing wolf spiders from choosing your property to live on can be a daunting task, but there are some things you can do to help deter them from invading your Southlake area home:

  • Trim back trees and bushes away from your home's exterior.
  • Remove piles of wood, rocks, and other organic debris from your property, as these spaces are often preferred hiding spots for wolf spiders.
  • Seal cracks in the foundation of your home, along with any spaces found around or underneath windows and doors.
  • Keep all your exterior doors as well as the doors to your garage or shed closed whenever possible.
  • Limit the places spiders have to hide in your home by keeping storage areas as organized and clutter-free as possible.
